the wave-multiple sound sources
Main content: Crossfade
Pedagogical objectives
- The student is able to execute a crescendo-decrescendo smoothly.
- The student is able to adjust his or her volume accordingly, within the ensemble
Pedagogical intentions
- Familiarize the students with the concepts of crossfadePerformed using the volume knobs, the fade-in is a mixing technique that aims to gently slide from one sound to another, the sound 1 gradually disappearing in favor of the sound 2. At the intersection of the sounds as one increases and the other decreases in volume, there will be a period where the two sounds will tend to merge., blend, accumulation, sonic-mass, density, spatialization and sustained sound.
- Refine the abilities of the students with respect to the perception of dynamics.
- Improve the response of the students to the directions (gestures) of the conductor/teacher.

Process
Setup:
- The teacher divides the group into 4-to-6 groups, and asks each student to choose a sustained sound from the Fonofone sound-bank.
Performance:
- The teacher determines the various start-times of playback by pointing to each group.
- When prompted, the assigned team gradually raises their volume to the desired level (crescendo).
- The same team listens carefully for the apparition of the next wave (crescendo) and gradually lowers their volume (decrescendo), ensuring a smooth crossfadePerformed using the volume knobs, the fade-in is a mixing technique that aims to gently slide from one sound to another, the sound 1 gradually disappearing in favor of the sound 2. At the intersection of the sounds as one increases and the other decreases in volume, there will be a period where the two sounds will tend to merge..
- Once all groups have entered with their crescendos, the teacher can experiment with different crescendos and decrescendos among the various groups.
- Assessment: Were the chosen sounds appropriate/adequate? Did they blend well? (Listen to and evaluate each choice.) Were the crescendos/decrescendos well executed? Were the transitions from one group to the other convincing? (smooth crossfades without gaps?) Were the directions of the conductor (teacher) followed faithfully?
Variation
One can optionally propose to redo the exercise, with all participants using the same sound.
